United opened the scoring after seven minutes when Shelbourne lost possessionon the right and the ball was played forward to Clyde Wijnhard, who brought in Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink. He, in turn found David Hopkin, who cut in from the right to beat Michael Frank with a low drive. Hasselbaink thought he had a good claim for a penalty when he was brought down by Pat Scully but he shrugged off his disappointment to score a stunning goal soon afterwards. Lee Sharpe dribbled into the Shelbourne penalty box but seemed to be dispossed by a defender but the ball ran free to the Dutchman who shot firsdt time into the net from twenty-five yards in the twenty-ninth minute. David Hopkin got his second and United's third, when he made no mistake with a hard drive after being set up by Lee Bowyer, eleven minutes before the end.Leeds sent on three substitutes at the start of the second half with Danny Granville replacing Ian Harte at Left Back, Harry Kewell replacing Lee Sharpe at Outside Left and Lee Bowyer replaced Alf-Inge Haaland at Right Half. Robert Molenaar was the final substitute, replacing Gunnar Halle at Right Back after an hour. Shelbourne replaced Sheridan with Richie Baker after thirty-one minutes, and then at Half-Time made a double substitution bringing on Dessie Baker and Doyle for Smith and Rutherford. There was a triple substitution in the sixty-fifth minute when O'Leary, Declan Geoghegan and former Leeds Junior keeper, Nick Byrne came on for Dean Fitzgerald, Dessie Baker and Michael Frank. Paul McKeon of Dublin was the Referee.
